Episode Title: IDK How To Talk To Aussie Girls With Beth McCarthy

Host(s): Archie, Katie

Guest(s): Beth McCarthy

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Archie (Host) | 00:00:04 to 00:00:15
Welcome to let's be perfectly queer, a. Queer podcast, creating space to talk about all things queer. My name is Archie. And I'm Katie. And we are your hosts.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:00:36 to 00:00:53
And I'm drunk and I'm single. The options double the problems I get what I want and I want both sides. I don't know how to talk to girls. I'm losing, not cooling. It's stupid.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:00:53 to 00:01:03
I can never find the words. I'm not usually like this. Butterflies with girls, it's different. Have you guys heard of Beth McCarthy? You might know her from TikTok.

Archie (Host) | 00:01:03 to 00:01:13
That is where I stumbled upon her, where she interviewed people in her, what do you call it? Series. Then I found out she was an incredible singer songwriter with her song Goodbye. Have you heard goodbye? I sure have.

Archie (Host) | 00:01:13 to 00:01:22
It's a very good song. I'm a sucker for a good like, lyric. You are, aren't you? Yeah. I think it's because you're such a lyricist to yourself, so you can see it in other people and it really.

Archie (Host) | 00:01:22 to 00:01:45
Vibes the storytelling and the lyrics and. Yeah, that's for me. So true. Well, for those who don't know, she really blew up in 2021 with her ep I don't know how to talk to girls and was already hit with over 30 million streams. She's got this raw, unapologetic style that so many people connect with, and now she's bringing that energy to Australia for the very first time.

Archie (Host) | 00:01:45 to 00:02:12
Yeah, it's a I don't know how to talk to Aussie Girls tour, which is a fun nod to a hit ep. She's playing in Brisbane on October 9, Melbourne on October 12 and Sydney this October 13. So Aussie fans are finally getting the chance to see her live. Unfortunately, like normal Perth, we do miss out, that's true. But there's nothing stopping us getting on a plane to have our pure fangirl fanboy fan moment and appreciating her across there.

Katie (Host) | 00:02:12 to 00:02:41
So she's also been touring all over the UK and Europe as well, playing festivals, selling out shows. Her live performances are full of energy and hard, so I think australian audiences have great things to look forward to. In our chat with Beth McCarthy, we covered her excitement for her first trip to Australia, what fans can expect on tour, including potential new tracks and surprises, and how her identity as a queer artist influences her music. All right, that's enough. Now, let's get into the interview a.

Archie (Host) | 00:02:41 to 00:02:47
Little bit disappointed when we saw that Perth wasn't included in the dates, but that's fine. That's fine. Oh, so is everyone.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:02:50 to 00:03:02
Oh, come on, give him a break. By the way, first of all, I want to say happy bisexual awareness week. Be aware of me. Do you know what I mean? Just a whole week dedicated to you.

Katie (Host) | 00:03:02 to 00:03:08
Yeah, yeah, that's true. Yeah, that's what it means, right? Literally. Exactly. Where are my presents?

Archie (Host) | 00:03:09 to 00:03:20
Well, if you came to Perth, we give you the presents. Oh, shut up. Honestly, I'm like, yay. I'm coming halfway, like I'm coming across the world. Yay.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:03:20 to 00:03:28
And then it's like, why aren't you coming to Perth? I'm like, oh, my God. I don't know. It's, you know, it's a running joke that no artist comes to Perth. No, whatever plays Perth.

Archie (Host) | 00:03:29 to 00:03:38
Yeah, it's exactly. So you're just included in every other artist, so don't stress about that. I'm going to convince you next time to come back to see us. Yeah, exactly. Absolutely.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:03:38 to 00:03:46
I'll make that happen. Yeah, exactly. However you make that happen, I'm sure you can do it. But thanks for jumping on. Thank you for having me.

Archie (Host) | 00:03:46 to 00:03:52
So we've got a couple of questions. So you're heading down under in October? I am. First time in Australia, correct. I, yeah.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:03:52 to 00:04:02
Ever so exciting. I'm so excited. What's the first thing on your bucket list that you want to do when you get here? I'm going to the beach. I'm going immediately to the beach.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:04:02 to 00:04:18
I'm going to get off a plane. I'm going to go and stand on a beach and I'm going to stay there for a few days and then I'm going to play some shows. Yeah, we're actually coming out early to Brisbane and we're going to go to Byron Bay. Oh, nice. Because that's where everybody's told us to go.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:04:18 to 00:04:33
And so we're going to have a weekend in Byron. And then, and then I get to do my shows because I was like, where can I get over the jet lag on a beach? Obviously. That's true. That's a very good idea, by the way, from one white girl to another, make sure you wear a sunblock, okay?

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:04:34 to 00:04:48
Don't you worry. Don't you worry, because I. I burn in the clouds, so I'm going to bathe in sun cream every day. Yeah, we got this. Thank you, though.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:04:48 to 00:04:58
Thank you for the warning. I needed it. I need to keep being reminded. Everybody forgets how harsh the Aussie sun is, so it's just like, just in case. And it's so beautiful out there and just soaking in the rays and you.

Archie (Host) | 00:04:58 to 00:05:05
Can fall asleep quite easily. Yeah. And then you wake up and you are the crab. A crab. A whole crab.

Archie (Host) | 00:05:06 to 00:05:14
Exactly. Lobster time. I'll be the literal colour of my hair and that would be great. Exactly. Being a queer artist in the music industry, how does that influence your work?

Archie (Host) | 00:05:14 to 00:05:41
Do you, like, do you feel there's added pressure to be, like, a voice for the community or is it more freeing to just do your own thing? It's honestly, like, a little bit of both, I think. I for a long time, didn't include my queerness in my music. Like, I was very much like, I'll happily sing about boys or anything else, but then if I am going to sing about a girl, then you ain't gonna know about it. And that was me for, like, quite a while.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:05:41 to 00:05:56
And I did a whole thing. I think I was like, oh, I don't want to just be known as a queer artist because I think that's. It's like being a woman, anything, right? Like, it's like, oh, really good female producer. And you're like, I'm just a good producer.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:05:56 to 00:06:16
Like, you know, a female whatever, then you're just like, okay, well, you didn't have to. So I didn't want to be. I think for a long time, I was a bit like, oh, I don't want to just be like a queer artist and just good for being a queer artist, all of that stuff. So you battle that. But then I kind of just at one point just thought, I don't know why I'm doing that.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:06:16 to 00:06:56
You know, I sort of want to really embrace my queerness. And I think I was doing it more in my personal life as well. I was being a lot more kind of openly queer and I had a lot more queer friends and that was starting to happen. And so I think naturally it made its way into my music because I write about my life. So I think I kind of made the decision to do that and then, yeah, then the feeling of not, I guess not pressure, but a little bit just wanting to be a voice did come into it because my big thing was I didn't really have music that represented my version of queer.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:06:56 to 00:07:21
You had some queer representation of music, but it's two ends of a scale. It's either I kissed a girl by Katy Perry, absolute banger. But, you know, we're not going to talk about that one. Or you have the super, super queer music where it's like I'm singing about being a full blown lesbian and you could never touch this because you have no idea who you are. It's like, right in your face, literally.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:07:22 to 00:07:46
And I'm like, oh, you're amazing. So I really wanted to kind of be that, I guess, in my music, and I really capture those little moments that I had in my journey. And that's where the don't house tortgirl's eP kind of came in was. Each song almost represents a different, like, little step of my journey. So, like, it starts with the, what do you call it?

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:07:46 to 00:08:00
Before I even knew what I wanted to be. But it's like, I'm different. I'm so different, but I don't know what that means for me. And then it kind of goes through all of the things of, like, she's pretty. Do I want to be her or do I want to be with her?

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:08:00 to 00:08:07
I don't know. Stress. I was like, oh, I do want to be with her, but I don't know how to talk to her. Stress. It's actually a lot of stress, to be honest.

Archie (Host) | 00:08:08 to 00:08:22
So being a queer artist and making music is lots of stress. It's just loads of stress. Yeah, actually. And so, yeah, that's, that's kind of, I think, come into it a lot, and I think I've done that and I really love doing that and I hope to include that moving forward. And I think I'm now at the stage where I'm like, okay.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:08:23 to 00:08:45
I've really, really written about, like, the queer experience because I think there's. I really would just like to be able to just be queer in music. And it not, I feel like at the moment, it's still a bit of, like, you're either not or you're speaking on the queer experience. And I'm like, I just want to speak about my experiences and in those I am queer. That would be great.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:08:45 to 00:09:06
And I think that's sort of what I'm going to try and do in my next thing is, like, write songs just for writing songs about whatever's going through. And if they're about a boy, they're about a boy. If they're about a girl, they're about a girl. And I could have an ep where there's a song about a boy in there and there's a song about a girl on there and they live together in harmony or anyone else who I happen to come across in my travels. Yeah, I love it.

Archie (Host) | 00:09:06 to 00:09:15
Cause, yeah, I'm a sucker for lyrics. And so the song, the goodbye, I love the quirky little lyrics in it. It's not punny, but it's, like, quirky. And I'm like. I like the intertwine of that.

Archie (Host) | 00:09:15 to 00:09:23
I think it's really clever. It also is incredibly punny. I mean, you can say it. It's fine. I really did.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:09:23 to 00:09:27
I really. Listen. The song is called goodbye. I think we can. Yeah, that's true.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:09:27 to 00:09:33
We can own the fact it's puns. I know. Dad jokes everywhere. I'll own it. It's fine.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:09:33 to 00:09:48
But that was kind of the point because I was like, bi phobia is. Is rife still. And, you know, people look at you, and for whatever reason, bi just never comes into it because it's like, oh, you're singing about girls. Great, you're a lesbian. Oh, you're singing about boys.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:09:48 to 00:10:05
Okay, you're straight. And that's really disappointing for everybody involved. And you're like, oh, that's annoying. So, like, having the song, that's just. It's supposed to be tongue in cheek and light hearted and makes you feel good, but actually, I'm singing about quite real, like, hey, shut up.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:10:05 to 00:10:32
Vibe. Yeah. And so, yeah, I think that was kind of, like, part of it where just not taking yourself too seriously in quite a serious, like, thing. Because if you get too serious about it, because I haven't noticed that it is something that you can easily get wrapped up in being just too serious, and then it's just really annoying for you yourself, because you're just, like, constantly getting irate about it, and it's. Life's too short.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:10:32 to 00:10:38
It's just like, okay, people don't get it. Slay. Like, I'm still gonna kiss everyone kiss, you know? Exactly. And you gotta have some fun.

Archie (Host) | 00:10:38 to 00:10:49
Like, you know, they're your songs and you want to have fun performing them, and. Yeah, that's just when I listen to that song, I'm like, oh, yeah, this just makes you happy. It's a good message, and it makes you happy. Yay. So we got to talk about the tour.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:10:49 to 00:10:56
Yes. What can fans expect? Some new bangers, a few surprises? Any cheeky covers? What do they expect from your show?

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:10:56 to 00:11:08
Always a cheeky cover. I love a cheeky cover. I just have to. I don't know. I think I was raised in the, like, gigging scene and busking as well, so, like, I know the power of a good cover.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:11:08 to 00:11:20
I love the power of a good cover, so I will always include one. I think probably even if I were to get to, like, Beyonce level, like, it's gonna happen. Okay. Oh, 100%. We believe in you.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:11:20 to 00:11:30
Thank you. Even if I was to get there, I'd probably still be covering songs. I'm like, they're so much better than me. So here's someone else's song. But, yeah, so definitely a cheeky cover.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:11:30 to 00:11:42
Always to try and bring the energy. And then, yeah, Australia are gonna get a sneaky. A sneaky newbie, I think, because who I just. They have to. I'm coming all the way across the other side of the world.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:11:42 to 00:11:49
If I'm not bringing a new song with me, then what am I doing? That's exactly it. The first time down under, you have to. Exactly. Has to be done.

Archie (Host) | 00:11:49 to 00:12:05
You've got this massive TikTok following, and I imagine that comes with a bit of juggling. Right. How do you keep your fans hype, but also stayed true to you and your own artistry? Like, how do you find that balance? I think it's a really hard one to know how to do, really, because it's.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:12:05 to 00:12:48
The thing with socials is you let people in, or the idea is to sort of let people into a part of your life, and then I think sometimes that can get confused with people thinking that they're seeing your whole life, so. And this was actually a big place of where goodbye came from was, you know, I got a really big platform by doing my, like, little mini mic street interviews with people, and it was during me releasing an entire repeat about my experiences with women as a woman who loves women, also loves literally everyone else. But those particular songs were about girls. And so all of the conversation that was being had around it, all of the interviews were with girls who like girls. That was.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:12:48 to 00:13:03
That was the idea, because that's what the songs were written for. Yeah. And so there wasn't any kind of deliberate exclusion of anyone else. But it's like, me talking to a straight man about anything is not really aiding my song. About the first time I slept with a girl.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:13:04 to 00:13:20
In fact, probably a negative connection to be making. I don't want his opinion, you know? So I. I did that a lot. And I think, obviously, being seen with queer women singing songs about girls, then everyone's immediate thought was, well, that's.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:13:20 to 00:13:28
That's a lesbian, and that's who she is, then that's great for us. And we have a lesbian. We have a lesbian icon. And I'm like, yay. Never said that, though.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:13:28 to 00:13:42
Always actually said I was bi but never said it. And then I think. And then I started dating a guy and everyone was just very stressed about it because it's like, oh, it's been hidden. It's been hidden from us. I'm like, it hasn't actually.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:13:43 to 00:14:01
If you've been there and you've seen it all, then you would have seen him in varying different things. However, what you're seeing is, like, literal promotion of my music and also just like, trying to be more of a platform for queer women because I am a queer woman. Yeah. Despite how I label that, you know? And I think that's.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:14:01 to 00:14:30
That's where it's really hard to juggle, is like, you want to give the world a bit of your life and an insight to your life and that is what they're seeing, but they're not. I can't show you all of it all the time because that's a very hard thing to do. And it also isn't relevant to half the stuff I'm doing. Like, you don't need to see that bit in order to understand this bit. And I think that was where goodbye came from because it's like, oh, well, it's kind of not really my fault that you saw me speaking to girls who like girls and assumed I was a lesbian from that because I never told you I was.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:14:30 to 00:15:02
But you've decided that that's the only way in which someone can be that queer with women is if you're a lesbian. And it's like, well, no, there's bi people who exist who, like, are very much also in love with women. Absolutely, yeah. I'd say from me being pansexual, it's always that internal dichotomy when you're in a relationship with a man or somebody or in a heterosexual presenting relationship, it's always that. It almost feels like you have to prove that you're queer and you still, like, have to prove that identity sometimes that.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:15:02 to 00:15:07
Yeah. And I think it's also people see. What they want to see. Exactly. And it's the assumption as well.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:15:07 to 00:15:23
Like, you know, it's like, oh, of course, this bisexual has ended up with a straight white man. And it's like, actually, he's not straight either, so you can go and leave. It's like, oh, uno, reversed that. Like, there you go. Go and do one.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:15:23 to 00:15:42
Because we're both by, so yolks are new, bitch. But, like, it's so annoying. I find it so annoying because it's like it's all just assumptions made off of what? And it's like, everyone hates being stereotyped, but the community is stereotyping in themselves. It's like, oh, she's got a carabiner on and short hair and wears boys clothes.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:15:42 to 00:15:53
She's a lesbian. And I'm like, no. It's like, yeah, it's very funny because a community that tries to be so inclusive, sometimes it's very pigeonholed into boxes. Like, you belong to this box. And it's like, who cares?

Archie (Host) | 00:15:53 to 00:15:58
Just be free to live however you want to. Free. Yeah. And also, like, labels can change. I think that this is the thing.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:15:58 to 00:16:21
And I've been having a few conversations about it, and I think it's a really sensitive topic because people get quite, you know, protective of their labels and protective of their identities. And it's like, oh, well, like you're saying that this label that describes me also describes that person, but that. That's not what I see my label being. You're wrong. And it's like, okay, but the point of the conversation is it can just change.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:16:21 to 00:16:39
Like, I can guarantee you that the majority of people who label themselves, like, they'll be gay men who have had girlfriends in their life, right? And there's lesbians who have spent a lot of their teenage years with men. Like, this happens. And then they go, oh, actually, not for me. And my.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:16:39 to 00:16:49
I'm now identifying as this. And I always was that, but. Or maybe I wasn't. Maybe I was bi initially and then decided I'm not anymore, and that's all just fine. Yeah.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:16:49 to 00:17:02
And I think some people go like, well, no, but that's not what happened to me. So, like, so now you're invalidating, like, my experience that. No, no, no. You're not being. You're not being invalidated just because that person's experience is this.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:17:02 to 00:17:11
Like, we all just have completely different lives and experiences and we just need to be fine with it. Yeah. And it just doesn't really matter that much. Yeah. And everybody's journey is different.

Archie (Host) | 00:17:11 to 00:17:26
Like, you don't have to fit into a box of, like, here's a diY, like, manual of how you're meant to do it. Like, everybody is very different. And that's what some people forget. Yeah. And if you get too, like, logged into what label you should be, you sort of stop enjoying what you actually are.

Archie (Host) | 00:17:26 to 00:17:35
Yeah. It's sort of like a label. You know, people. I get so many DM's of people being like, how did you know you were bi? I think I'm this.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:17:35 to 00:17:44
I think. And I'm like, oh, it doesn't matter. Like, it doesn't matter what you call it. You can just be whatever. That's the fun, that's the fun part.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:17:44 to 00:17:53
And if you find a label that fits you, then sick, you know? Yeah. Because I get a lot the same thing about being trans and it's like, I can't answer that for you. I honestly can't. It's your own journey.

Archie (Host) | 00:17:53 to 00:18:02
My journey's going to be completely different to yours. Exactly. And it's one of those things. And like you said, it's not. Being queer isn't the only thing that represents us as human beings.

Katie (Host) | 00:18:02 to 00:18:14
I guess it comes back to, I look forward to, like, what your next music comes up with. Yeah, it's going to be exciting, brilliant, individual. Still, like, embracing your queerness and embracing. And just being you and putting that in an album. Exactly, yeah, I love that.

Archie (Host) | 00:18:19 to 00:18:31
A couple more questions before we let you go because I know we are on a tight schedule. You're good. Sweet. Okay, that's fine. If you could hit the studio with any artist, dead or alive, who would it be and what kind of track are we talking about?

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:18:32 to 00:18:41
Oh, that's a great question. Okay, so I would write dead. I'm going to have two. Sorry. That's fine.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:18:41 to 00:18:53
Dead. Freddie Mercury, right? Queen. Queen till I die. Freddie Mercury is like, oh, I'm so upset that we just don't exist at the same time because.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:18:54 to 00:19:09
And I would love to make, like a queen style track. Like, it would just be so fun, you know, with like, all the stackies, like, let's go theatrical. Like super operatic. Yeah. Honestly, it would just be the absolute dream.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:19:09 to 00:19:25
And I love performing live. So, like, Freddie Mercury as a frontman is like, you know, the dream and also queer. And I'm like, we'll be queer together and then alive is difficult. So Miley Cyrus probably will always be. Will always be.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:19:25 to 00:19:41
And I would love that just to, like, make my, you know, happy teenage dreams. You know what, I'm my now dreams. Forget teenage me. I'm still obsessed. So either Miley to go for like, a real rock track, like, let's all go big vocals, or, like, troy Sivan.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:19:41 to 00:19:47
And that's because I'm obsessed with that. I'm obsessed. I'm obsessed. I love him. I fancy him loads.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:19:47 to 00:19:54
Unfortunately, he'll never fancy me. He's one of the few people who don't fit. You never know. His journey may change. Who knows?

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:19:54 to 00:20:11
Do you know when I'm talking about changing labels, Troy, uh, troy, if you ever fancy it, you know, where I am, honestly. And did you know Troy is actually from Perth? So if we ever see him around here, we'll show him this. Let him know. Let him know.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:20:11 to 00:20:22
Honestly, I'm like, I love him so much. I just think he's such a slate. And I love, I love him. And I really like that kind of. I'd love to do something that branched into that world because I am.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:20:23 to 00:20:42
I'm a band girly at heart. Like, I love, I'm a pop girly who wants to be a rock star. I love instruments and guitars and that is where my heart lies. And that's the music I will make. But it would be cute to do a little, you know, like a cunty Troy savannah collab vibe just to see how it feels.

Archie (Host) | 00:20:42 to 00:20:49
Why not? You never know. You never know if you don't like it, if you haven't tried it. Is that what they say? That's what they say.

Archie (Host) | 00:20:50 to 00:21:07
So touring can be exhausting, and obviously you're going to have to come all the way. What's your ultimate guilty pleasure? When you just want to chill out, relax, or if you want to go a bit hard? What is your guilty pleasure on tour? Oh, what is my guilty pleasure?

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:21:07 to 00:21:25
This isn't my guilty pleasure, but something I find really funny is that when I knew I was coming to Australia, I was like, right, I've got to sleep on that plane. I've never been more invested in neck pillows in my life. And I just, I, like, I was on TikTok, like, the best neck pillow watching. I was there at 02:00 a.m. like, scrolling.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:21:25 to 00:21:35
Here are my reviews on the best neck pillows for flat. And I'm like, what am I doing with my life anyway? I was. I mean, I'm not gonna lie. And which one did you choose, by the way?

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:21:35 to 00:21:43
Well, I'm not. I've got a few. You got a couple in your cart not ready to purchase? I've got a couple. I've got a couple that I'm gonna have to try out.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:21:43 to 00:22:11
We've got the turtle one that's, like, the viral turtle one that, like, holds the side of your head but, like, looks absolutely insane. And then you've got, like, there's an ostrich one which just, like, basically, like, oh, my God, I haven't got that one because that's insane. And I'm like, I don't know that I I don't know how that I have it in me to where basically, you know, that episode of Friends where, like, Joey gets a chicken stuck in his head. Yeah, it looks like that you could do it. And I don't have that in me.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:22:11 to 00:22:22
Yeah, I don't have it in me. I believe in you. However, I'm not gonna lie. I would love to say that I'm a really healthy Torah, and I need to start being that. And with my management is listening to this.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:22:22 to 00:22:28
I promise I'll be healthy. Yeah. I do. I do go a bit hard. I like to go out.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:22:28 to 00:22:39
I like to experience the bars. Okay. And so, like, I also really like. You know, I went and toured Dublin, and so we obviously had to get a Guinness. Oh, yeah.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:22:39 to 00:22:46
And then you like. You know, I mean, it's like we're in the place. So what's my thing in Australia? What do I need? You need to do a shoey.

Archie (Host) | 00:22:46 to 00:22:55
You need to do a shoei. We like her. We don't make her. Don't shoei do we ever know? It might happen, like, great coffee.

Archie (Host) | 00:22:55 to 00:23:01
We do. We've got amazing coffee. But it's iconic. A shoe is iconic. You go, like, no espresso martinis.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:23:01 to 00:23:07
I was going to say, you can shut up about your sui espresso martinis. I'm here. I'm here for it. So, yeah, I do. I do, like, a little.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:23:08 to 00:23:22
A little drinky and a little boogie. I really enjoy, like, a random night out after a tour show. Like, if I've got, like, a day off the next day. And luckily coming to ours, we've planned it, because I'm coming so far that I'm gonna get a couple days either side. That's good.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:23:22 to 00:23:41
So we're gonna go to Byron for the weekend before Brisbane. So it's like, we can get into Brisbane, we do a little drive and sit on a beach, and then we'll do the shows and then have a couple days in Sydney after. So I can actually experience a little bit of ours as well. Yeah. Are you gonna try to climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge?

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:23:41 to 00:23:51
Oh, what is that? So you can actually, like, you book it and you can literally climb over the Sydney Harbour Bridge, like, all attached and stuff and go up. Do you have a fear of heights? No. That sounds kind of fun.

Archie (Host) | 00:23:51 to 00:23:57
You should definitely do it. Absolutely. Maybe I should do that. And then you can think of us right when you're right at the top. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:23:57 to 00:24:06
I'll look for you. Because from up there, all the way from Perth, I'll be like, hello? And we just pop up. Yeah. You're like, what?

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:24:07 to 00:24:14
Like what? I had no idea. Yeah, no, I might give that a go, actually. That sounds fun. Yeah.

Archie (Host) | 00:24:14 to 00:24:20
And are you going to do, like, the hold the koala thing that most people do? Probably not, no. I don't know why a lot of people do that. I don't. Yeah.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:24:20 to 00:24:28
I don't think I have ever really felt the need to hold a koala. I have a sausage dog kind of like, does the same, I guess. I don't know. Yeah, that's all you need. That's all you need.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:24:28 to 00:24:38
Shorter legs, but, you know, a nice, cute thing that you're holding, so. And it doesn't smell. Koalas. People don't know koalas smell. Oh, do they smell?

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:24:38 to 00:24:47
Yeah, I know. That's kind of. That's kind of heartbreaking, actually. Like, these many little koalas. I bless them.

Archie (Host) | 00:24:47 to 00:25:03
All right, so give us your best elevator pitch. Why should everyone get off their couches and fly from Perth over to see you and come to your shows when you're here in Australia? Earlier, from. All the way from Perth, honestly, I like this. Everyone says this about their fans, right?

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:25:03 to 00:25:16
My fans are literally the coolest. Well, they're not that cool, actually. And that's why they're cool and I'm. Because I'm not cool and we're not cool together. But it's like, my last tour, we think you're cool.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:25:16 to 00:25:35
Thank you. My last tour, I made a bunch of group chats for, like, people who were coming on their own or whatever, and they were just. It was just so nice. And everybody made friends. Like, there's so many people who I know who are, like, besties from just coming to the shows and, like, I don't know, this just.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:25:35 to 00:25:42
It just feels really vibey. I think for me, because I love. I love live music. I love performing live. I love being in the crowds.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:25:42 to 00:25:51
And so for me, any tour, I'm like, right. That's where I'm putting my energy. Like, fuck the music. Do you know what I mean? Like, the shows, that's what matters.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:25:51 to 00:26:23
So I'm just like, I want to create a space where we just actually have fun and you're there and I'm not just going to go and sing some songs with you. Like, I want us all to have a good time. And so if that's what you're into, just coming in. And also, you know, it naturally becomes, like, kind of a safe space for quiz. And it is something I try to do, but it almost, like, does it itself, because I think, like, you know, the music does represent the little grey areas of queer people.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:26:23 to 00:26:50
And so there are a bunch of people who don't know how to talk to girls because they get the song, you know, and it's all just really accepted that some of us are a bit nervous, but you don't need to be. And, yeah, it just ends up being a really nice space. I know people who have met their partners at my show, so that's so cool. If you're looking for love, if you're looking for some queer love, you know where I am, you know, that's awesome. I can, I can do that for you, maybe.

Archie (Host) | 00:26:51 to 00:26:55
Love that. Like speed dating. Just. Just come along. You never know who's going to be there.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:26:55 to 00:27:08
Exactly. Come along. So if you want a queer safe space, if you just want to have fun, if you already know me and you're like, ah, I can't be bothered. But you're going to get a new song that nobody's ever heard before. So then you should come sneak a little cover.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:27:08 to 00:27:18
You don't even have to only listen to my songs. You can listen to someone else that you probably will like, you know, so loads of reasons to come. Sounds like it. No, sounds great. So, yeah.

Archie (Host) | 00:27:18 to 00:27:25
Thank you. Thank you so much. It's been a lot of fun. Can we just ask you a little favour? So what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna do this little sign out and I'm gonna go.

Archie (Host) | 00:27:25 to 00:27:32
Until next time. I hope that we have been. And then could you finish with perfectly queer? All right, until next. Oh, wait, I'll do a little.

Archie (Host) | 00:27:32 to 00:27:37
I'm not gonna go straight into that. Sounded really, like, robotic. Until next time. Exactly. Sounded like great.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:27:37 to 00:27:44
I really enjoyed it. Yeah. Thanks so much for having a chat with us. It's been a lot of fun. I don't know if school will get me time off to go over to see your concert.

Archie (Host) | 00:27:44 to 00:27:50
I think I might lose my job anyway. Honestly, do it, it's fine. Exactly. You endorsed it. It's fine.

Beth McCarthy (Guest) | 00:27:50 to 00:28:00
I am sick. That's the move, you know. Thank you so much. So until next time, I hope that. We have been perfectly queer.

Archie (Host) | 00:28:08 to 00:28:10
Let's be perfectly queer.
